Sugar & Honey
Granulated sugar is used for most baking. It is generally labeled as Regular, Table, Fine, or Extra Fine Sugar.
Superfine sugar is quick to dissolve, and is used in drinks and in certain baking applications. It is also called Ultra-Fine, Castor, or Bar Sugar.
Powdered sugar dissolves almost instantly, and is not used for baking, but mostly for things like icings, whipped creams, and to decorate toppings. It is also called Confectioners, 10X, or Icing Sugar.
Pearl sugar is in large crystal form, does not melt readily, and is used when it is desirable to bake-in sweet pockets, or to caramelize surface spots. It is also called Sanding, Medium Coarse, or Coarse Sugar.
Brown sugar is granulated sugar that still contains molasses, and is used when a strong molasses flavor is desirable in cooking an baking. It is also called Golden, Dark Brown, or Light Brown Sugar.
Turbinado sugar is granulated and only partially refined, maintaining a noticeable molasses flavor in beverages and baked goods. It is also sometimes called Raw or Washed Sugar.
According to the National
Honey Board, "Honey should not be fed to infants under one year of age.
.... Honey may contain bacterial spores that can cause infant botulism - a
rare but serious disease that affects the nervous system of young babies
(under one year of age)."
